Extraordinary mission: Saving lives

Our mission is to be the leading provider of first aid and related health services in Victoria.

St John Volunteers have been providing first aid services to the community for more than 125 years. In 2008, our First Aid Volunteers attended around 5,300 events, treating over 13,500 casualties, approximately 750 of which were life-saving interventions. Our exceptional standards mean our volunteer services are always in high demand.

As an emergency support agency under the Victorian Emergency Management Act, St John Volunteers are also called on to provide first aid assistance in times of crisis like bushfires, floods and other mass-casualty disasters. To prepare for emergencies, we need to frequently recruit and train new volunteers so they are ready to be deployed in times of great need at short notice.

Extraordinary commitment: Learning life-saving skills

An extraordinary mission demands extraordinary skills and commitment. You need no prior skills or experience to become a St John volunteer. We are committed to providing our volunteers with the best possible first aid training and infrastructure to ensure that our volunteers are fully qualified and well equipped to perform potentially life-saving procedures.

Most of our training programs are nationally accredited and not only provide you with essential life-saving skills, but could also help enhance your career.

We ask you for a minimum 12-month commitment, which includes attending a minimum of one event a month in conjunction with ongoing training during the week.

At critical incidents when a life is at stake, St John Volunteers depend on one another. They are part of an extraordinary team, where everyone selflessly dedicates themselves to caring for the community. Friendships made at St John often last a life time.

Extraordinary experience: Having the time of your life

Being a St John Volunteer means you could attend major events including the AFL, Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix, Australian Open, and concerts as well as local events such as school fetes, sports, festivals and carnivals. If you love the action, the adrenaline and the crowds, you will have the time of your life with St John!
