The Douglas Donald Recreation Camp as it is traditionally known was proposed to become a camp for St John Ambulance Cadets (St John Ambulance members aged 11 to 17 years) in 1956 but did not open until 1964 when a long term lease was arranged on the Crown Land. Initially the camping was under canvas, but eventually the facilities and cabins were built. The camp was made to accommodate officer training, and a variety of recreational activities as it is still done today.

The St John Ambulance Cadets still use the traditional method of sleeping under canvas at the Easter Camp, the annual event that is a highlight on Cadets Calenders. This is where they can learn to Socialise, gain leadership skills and increase developmental capabilities. The Easter camp consists of recreational outdoor adventure activities, trust and support character building programs and much more.

Cadets are the future of St John Ambulance Vic. The St John Ambulance Camp provides them with a place to learn in familiar surroundings.
